Who won? It was neck-and-neck most of the game, with high-level players. WA did come out on top on a game well-played. Now that there is a polo field in Bend, expect more matches in the future.

All print sales from this photo series benefit the remote Costa Rican indigenous Bríbrí village of Yorkín, severely damaged by flooding in 2008.

This tiny community continues to be a special find for travelers: exceptional hospitality, tranquil days and the beauty and bounty of the jungle await. No autos here — you’re transported by pole-powered dugout canoe.

Print prices: 11x14: $20, 8x10: $15, 5x7 or 5x5: $10, available online here. I have intentionally priced them low to encourage your support. You may also choose to add framing & matting of your print for cost; again, all profits on the prints will go to the people of Yorkín.

How to hold many arrows with your bow in your bow hand, and have them at the ready for quick shooting.

This is demonstrated using a thumb-draw technique and shooting from the right side of the bow --Mongolian archer fashion used by many horse archers.

You can learn to do this technique reloading while riding at speed on the horse as well. Start with 3 arrows and build up to what your hand can hold, nine or more?

the village of Yorkín, Costa Rica

The tiny village of Yorkín, an indigenous Bríbrí community in Costa Rica, is a special find for travelers — gentle hospitality, tranquil days, and the beauty and bounty of the rainforest.

The villagers now live a mix of traditional lifestyle with some modern conveniences, but have no cars, fish with bows and arrows they make, construct and travel in dugout canoes, grow & process cacao (chocolate), make jewelry, carvings and basketry from native plants, and host visitors.

One night in November of 2008, a 90-foot wall of water crashed down the river beside the village.
Their crops, boats, the gathering house, guest accommodations, clinic, toilets and several other buildings were swept away or severely damaged.
The community was initially at a complete loss; their livelihood and means of daily subsistence were gone.

But they are rebuilding: this year’s crops are producing, the gathering house & kitchen, sanitary facilities and guest accommodations are now at a point where travelers can come stay and even help with the reconstruction if they choose.

Dougal Haines explaining the nuances of the design & creation of the cherry wood doors for the new Dharma Meditation Center in Ashland, Oregon.

The doors are each 3' x 6', a subtle classic design, with beautifully carved symbols of the Eight Spokes of Wisdom and the Knot of Infinity. The pushes & pulls are hand-wrought iron by Ponderosa Forge & Ironworks.

Sisters Rodeo Grounds, late March 2010. Charles Hunter operating the big CAT while GJ Miller looks on and helps out. The rock screener receives bucket-loads of dirt, spits rocks out the sides, and spews finely sifted dirt. The top 18-20 inches of the arena ground will soon be rock-less -- dirt that any temporarily airborne cowboy or cowgirl would greet with less trepidation.
